The Triple S Story

History

Triple S is a multi-generational agricultural operation located in the foothills of Eagle, Idaho. Our roots go back to Queensland, Australia where William Scoresby turned share cropping into a family farm through sweat, tears and old-fashioned hard work. At the turn of the century William and his dear wife Jessie picked up their little family and immigrated to America. They came to Idaho and started over again. As immigrants they picked up jobs as they were able. Grandpa worked with various sheep outfits over several years in and around the valley including the Iona Sheep Co.. Grandpa William's sacrifice set the foundation for what is now 4 generations in farming in Idaho.

Today

My Dad taught me everything I know about farming and taking care of animals. He understood God's creation on a different level than anyone else I know. He could stand and watch a group of pregnant cows for a few minutes and know if one was going into labor even before she knew it herself. He valued life so much that it wasn't uncommon for him to give a new born calf mouth-to-mouth to try to save its life. He could truly communicate with animals. His voice could make them move quickly in one moment or give them soothing comfort in another. He loved his animals and they loved him back. It was from him that I gained my strong appreciation for farming. When you grow up on a farm you either love the animals and tolerate the crops or you hate the animals and love running the tractors. I was the former. I always loved being around the animals more than anything else.

When I was young we often got "bum" lambs from one of the large sheep ranches in Central Idaho. There was something special about taking the smallest, weakest lamb in your arms and nursing them to health and ultimately to market. It wasn't without heart break. Bum lambs are notorious for dying if you blink. There is no better way to learn about the value of life than from a baby lamb.

When we got our small acreage in Eagle we wanted to have animals for the kids to experience those same life lessons. So we started looking into small ruminants and the various breeds of sheep. We ran onto the Dorpers and were instantly attracted to them for all the practical reasons including shedding ability, meat capacity and docility. We couldn't be more happy with our choice of Dorpers. They are all that and so much more. They gain weight on minimal and lower quality feeds. They are the best mothers and their lambs get up and get going right away. I swear they are the easiest breed of sheep to raise...though I'm not an authority.

Anyone that knows me knows that I don't do anything half way. I believe in the saying..."A pretty sheep and an ugly sheep eat the same amount so you might as well enjoy looking at them." We want to put together a group of the prettiest Dorper sheep you can find in one place. Its an unattainable goal but one which we will aspire to.

Breeding Philosophy

We seek the best Dorper genetics from the most renowned flocks throughout the United States. We are extremely picky in the genetics we invest in. Production quality is at the forefront of our decision making. We place high stress on structural traits and maintaining breed standards. We focus on breed improvement and cull heavy within our registered flock. Check out our Dorper page for a partial listing of the genetics at work in our program.
